My journey began on the 24th of September 2013...the dreaded day I was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer.
A week prior to that I visited my GP as I felt pain and a lump under my arm. He sent me for a biopsy and then called me in to give me the results. It was CANCER...and I went totally blank as this was the last thing I was expecting to hear.
I was only 32 years of age and wasn't prepared emotionally. My GP advised me to see Dr Shaheeda Sonday a specialist in breast surgery. I visited her before my operation and discussed what was happening and what my options was going forward. She was extremely helpful and friendly and made me feel very comfortable under the circumstances.
I was always told that a female Doctor is less caring and sympathetic when it comes to treating a female patient... but this was untrue in my case. Shaheeda was very patient and made me feel so much more at ease. She performed my mastectomy on the 7th of October 2013 and 2 weeks prior she did my PORT procedure. All the time reassuring me that everything is OK and that definitely made my experience a lot better.
After my ops I was still able to chat with her during follow up appointments regarding my progress. I was even able to message her if I had any queries or problems. She always replied and if need arranged to see me with urgency if it was an emergency.
Today 5 years later ...I'm still in contact with her via social media and she will always ask how I'm doing? My experience being Shaheeda's patient was an absolute pleasure and I would definitely recommend her practice to anyone...

Dr Sonday displayed amazing empathy and professionalism during this time. She was able to rapidly pull together a team of support professionals including her partner, Dr Bradley David, Dr Gareth September (Plastic Surgeon), Dr Lisa Dalmeyer (oncologist) as well as the linking well with the teams for Radiology, Pathology and Nuclear Medicine to ensure that I had a smooth medical experience. I was impressed by the quality of the surgery I received as well as the followup and regular communication.
Dr Sonday communicated well with my loved ones to put them at ease and ensured that the journey up to now was clear to all of us.
Even though I have known Dr Sonday for many years, this was the first time I have been in her care and it was a privilege to experience her warmth and kindness to her patients when meeting in her rooms and in the wards. She is a great asset to the Life Hospital Group and Vincent Pallotti hospital in general.
Given my current journey with Breast cancer, I am especially supportive and enthusiastic to support Dr Sonday and Dr David’s proposal for a dedicated Breast Clinic. I believe that they would be well placed to direct a holistic and integrated center of excellence. The complexities of the numerous clinicians, tests and options are difficult to navigate for even those with medical knowledge and I believe that this will provide a much needed service to the women of Cape Town."
